Our Services
Neuropsychiatry
Our neuropsychiatry service supports people experiencing changes in mood, behaviour, thinking or emotional wellbeing following a neurological illness, injury or complex medical condition.
Neurological conditions can affect far more than physical function. They may also influence personality, motivation, relationships, sleep, emotional regulation and a person’s ability to engage in rehabilitation or everyday life. Our neuropsychiatry service provides specialist assessment and treatment to help individuals understand these changes and access the right support.
Resilience Neuro Specialists provides neuropsychiatry services at our Therapy Centre near Coventry, Leamington Spa, Kenilworth and Rugby, as well as in clients’ homes, care settings and other community locations across the Midlands.
What is neuropsychiatry?
Neuropsychiatry is a specialist area of medicine concerned with the relationship between neurological conditions, mental health, behaviour and brain function.
Understanding how it works
A neuropsychiatric assessment considers the whole clinical picture. This may include the person’s neurological diagnosis, medical history, current medication, mental health, cognition, behaviour, relationships and ability to manage daily life.
The assessment may involve discussion with the individual, family members, carers and other professionals involved in their care. The neuropsychiatrist may also review medical records, rehabilitation reports and previous assessments.
Following assessment, recommendations may include medication, psychological support, behavioural strategies, further investigation or changes to the wider rehabilitation plan.
Neuropsychiatry can also help clarify whether symptoms are linked to a neurological condition, a mental health condition, medication, pain, fatigue, sleep difficulties or a combination of factors.
Who can benefit?
You may benefit from specialist neuropsychiatry support if you are experiencing:
- Low mood, anxiety or emotional distress following a neurological injury or diagnosis
- Significant changes in behaviour, personality or emotional regulation
- Agitation, aggression, impulsivity or reduced inhibition
- Reduced motivation, apathy or difficulty engaging in rehabilitation
- Sleep disturbance, fatigue or changes in daily routine
- Unusual thoughts, confusion, hallucinations or changes in perception
- Difficulties caused by medication or uncertainty about current treatment
- Complex symptoms involving both neurological and mental health factors
- Problems adjusting to changes in independence, work, relationships or identity
- Family or care difficulties linked to changes in behaviour or mental state
Our neuropsychiatry service can also support families, carers and professionals who need guidance on understanding and managing complex presentations.
Outcomes you can expect
Depending on the individual’s needs, neuropsychiatry may help to achieve:
- A clearer understanding of changes in mood, behaviour or mental state
- More effective management of anxiety, depression, agitation or emotional instability
- Review and optimisation of medication
- Improved engagement in rehabilitation and everyday activities
- Reduced distress for the individual and those supporting them
- Better communication between medical, rehabilitation and care teams
- Practical recommendations for managing complex behaviour
- Greater stability, independence and quality of life
- A clearer plan for ongoing treatment and support
Recommendations are reviewed as needed so that treatment can adapt to changes in the person’s condition, circumstances and rehabilitation goals.
Our approach
Specialist neuropsychiatric intervention
Our neuropsychiatry service is designed for people with complex neurological, psychological and behavioural needs.
We recognise that symptoms rarely occur in isolation. Mood, cognition, pain, sleep, medication, relationships, environment and physical disability can all affect how a person feels and behaves. We therefore take a broad, clinically informed approach rather than considering symptoms separately.
Support may include:
- Comprehensive neuropsychiatric assessment
- Review of neurological and psychiatric symptoms
- Medication review and treatment recommendations
- Assessment of mood, anxiety, behaviour and emotional regulation
- Advice on agitation, impulsivity, aggression or reduced motivation
- Support with adjustment to injury or diagnosis
- Guidance for families, carers and support teams
- Recommendations for psychological or behavioural intervention
- Liaison with GPs, consultants and other healthcare professionals
- Contribution to multidisciplinary rehabilitation planning
Our neuropsychiatrists can work alongside neuropsychologists, neurophysiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, dietitians and other professionals to provide coordinated care.
Sessions may take place at our Resilience Therapy Centre, at home, in a care setting or elsewhere in the community, depending on the individual’s needs.
