Understanding the technology

How it works

AMADEO is a robotic-assisted therapy system designed to restore movement in the hand, fingers, and thumb after injury, illness, or long-term immobility. Each finger is individually supported by small magnetic pads attached to gentle motorised sliders, allowing for precise, natural grasping and releasing motions.

The system can be used in three modes:

  • Passive – AMADEO moves the fingers entirely for early stimulation.
  • Assistive – the user moves with support from the device.
  • Active – the user moves independently against resistance, with real-time feedback.

As you work, AMADEO measures key data such as grip force, range of motion, tone, and spasticity. This allows your therapist to tailor each session and track your progress over time.

It is especially helpful for those who find conventional hand therapy difficult due to pain, fatigue, or limited strength, as the robotic system can provide exactly the level of assistance needed while still encouraging active participation.

Who can benefit from AMADEO Robotic Hand Therapy?

We use AMADEO to support people at all stages of recovery – from the early days after an injury when movement is limited, through to rebuilding fine motor skills and strength for greater independence. It is suitable for both adults and children and can be adapted to target a single finger, the whole hand, or anything in between.

Valuable for a range of conditions
  • Recovering hand and finger movement after a stroke or brain injury
  • Managing weakness, stiffness, or spasticity following a spinal cord injury
  • Living with multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy and seeking to maintain or improve dexterity
  • Relearning upper limb control after a Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)
  • Regaining mobility after hand trauma, orthopaedic injury, or surgery
  • Working to reduce contractures or stiffness caused by immobility
Why It Helps Recovery

Unlike manual therapy alone, AMADEO provides real-time feedback on every movement, helping you see and feel how your hand is improving. This makes it easier to correct technique, stay motivated, and measure progress over time. The adaptive support means you can start therapy earlier in recovery, even before you can move your fingers independently, without risking strain or discouragement.

Recovering hand and finger function takes time, repetition, and precision. AMADEO makes therapy more effective by delivering hundreds of guided movements in each session with accuracy and consistency.

ENGAGING THERAPY

AMADEO keeps therapy engaging by incorporating interactive, game-like activities.

These virtual challenges transform repetitive exercises into rewarding tasks, such as catching objects on screen or completing timed movements.

This makes sessions more enjoyable, encourages active participation, and can help you stay committed to your recovery programme for longer.

Frequently asked questions

Robotic hand therapy, such as AMADEO, provides guided, repetitive movements that help retrain the brain and muscles to work together. This can improve grip strength, finger control, and coordination after a stroke or brain injury.

Yes. AMADEO can be used in the early stages of recovery, even if you can’t move your fingers on your own. In passive mode, it gently moves your hand to stimulate muscles and joints, helping to maintain flexibility and prevent stiffness.

Absolutely. AMADEO supports targeted exercises for individual fingers and the thumb, helping to rebuild the small, precise movements needed for tasks like buttoning clothes, holding utensils, or writing.

AMADEO is used for people recovering from stroke, brain or spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), hand trauma, orthopaedic injuries, and post-surgical recovery. It can help with weakness, spasticity, stiffness, and reduced dexterity.

Robotic hand therapy doesn’t replace traditional therapy but enhances it. AMADEO can deliver hundreds of consistent, high-quality repetitions in each session, provide real-time feedback, and track progress — all of which support faster and more measurable improvements.
