Dr Martine Stoffels is a Consultant Psychiatrist specialising in general adult, old age and rehabilitation psychiatry, with more than 20 years of international experience. Her career includes psychiatric practice in Ireland and specialist training in Oxford, followed by consultant and clinical leadership roles. She has a particular interest in neuropsychiatry, supporting people with acquired and traumatic brain injury, memory disorders, cognitive difficulties and changes in personality following brain injury or illness. Her experience also includes attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and co-occurring substance use conditions.
Dr Stoffels takes an integrated, holistic approach to neurorehabilitation, considering the relationship between neurological difficulties, mental health and behaviour. She has expertise in complex diagnostic assessments and mental capacity assessments, including situations where brain injury, mental health conditions, personality disorder and substance use overlap. Her work also includes risk assessment, behavioural management and assessment of fitness to plead. This breadth of experience supports her understanding of people whose rehabilitation involves several overlapping needs.
Alongside assessment, Dr Stoffels offers a range of treatments that do not involve medication. These include repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), Cogmed working memory training and cognitive analytic therapy (CAT).
